Inspired by the English translation of the text of Sr. Eduardo Loredo Muller, and slightly motivated by a long break in our show/breeding life, as well as in… well, life in general – I decided to put a note about an interesting topic that usually makes emotions arise – the PRICE of the puppies coming from a reputable nest.
“HOW MUCH FOR A PUPPY?”

Let me say a few words to you, yes you, the person who writes an email to simply ask about the price.
The person who calls and after hearing the price states with surprise: “I can buy a cheaper pup elsewhere”.
It also refers to you; the person who doesn’t care about the papers because you “just want a pet”.
No dog is “just a pet”.
Behind every purebred puppy/dog stands its BREEDER. I’m using capital letters to differentiate a breeder from a pet factory or a puppy mill. A reputable breeder does not breed dogs without papers, for that does not protect the integrity of the breed. The “papers” (registration) are the records of the bloodline and allow one to do a research on any possible health issues that might be present in the line.
When you tell a Breeder you don’t care about papers what you are really telling them is that you could not care less about the health of the puppy. You just want the cheapest option you can find!
When you select to buy a puppy from a reputable and quality breeder, this breeder is responsible for the health of every pup; both for the dogs owned by them, and for every pup they have sold for its lifetime. This breeder will skip holidays, miss sleeping, and most of their personal house space has been turned into space for their dogs. The truly passionate breeders who love what they breed, put their whole heart and soul into it. Not only into the puppies they sell, but also into each client who owns a piece of their heart and becomes a member of their extended family. Breeders worry about their babies, and will take one back if it turns out neccessary.
A breeder will get his hands dirty, often covered in everything accompanied by birth giving. Because that’s what life is about… Between birth and death there is LIFE. The wheel keeps turning.
A breeder will do tests, echos, x-rays, analysis, emergency c-sections, and vaccinations. A breeder registers his litters, makes a research about the pedigrees, has his puppies dewormed, microchiped and evaluated by specialists.
Last but by no means least, a breeder CHOOSES the family lucky enough to have one of their puppies. Yes, you are reading that right. A true breeder chooses who they sell their puppies to because they do not make money of the sale. There is no compensation that can offset the investment the breeder has already made, so they need to be confident it is the right fit. More frequently saying NO then YES… A good Breeder will have different criterias for those wanting to carry on their bloodline. Why? Because breeding is not a responsibility to ever be taken lightly, it’s a lifestyle choice for ONLY a few devoted people who are ready to sacrifice.
Because a dog never is “just a pet”. It’s a breeder’s legacy, a little boy’s best friend, a little girl’s protector, an elderly person’s therapist, a member of the family, someone’s whole world…
